Abstract

This article argues that an important concern of Gísla saga (the shorter version) is to show the hero, the poet and the outlaw, as a sinful interpreter in a difficult and ambiguous world. The saga was composed by a person or persons familiar with medieval Christian "semiotics", in such a way that the reader is made acutely aware of the difficulties and responsibility of interpreting.
