Vanskráð Snæfjallarstrandarhandrit í safni Thotts Greifa
Abstract
This short paper represents a sequel to an article in Gripla 21 (2010), in which I discuss the activities of Bjarni Jónsson from Snæfjallaströnd, a prolific scribe in the second quarter of the 17th century. In that paper I touch on the scribal activities of Bjarni’s father, the Reverend Jón Þorleifsson of Staður on Snæfjallaströnd. Two original documents, written in different hands, were discussed, but with no extant manuscript available in Jón’s hand there seemed no way to decide which of the two documents he had written. A manuscript (Thott 25 4to) has since come to light, in which the scribe indicates that he finished writing it at “Snjáfjöll” on 7 February 1599. This anonymous figure must be the Reverend Jón Þorleifsson and he, in turn, must have been the scribe of one of the two aforementioned manuscripts, ÞÍ. Bps. A. I, hylki XIV, nr. 15, which was written at Snæfjöll on 18 March 1603.
