The article examines the influence of Guðbrandur Vigfússon on Jón Árnason’s folktale collection, Íslenzkar þjóðsögur og æfintýri (1862–1864). It particularly discusses Guðbrandur’s editorial role, whereby he modified the folktales from Jón’s intended version, adding and omitting stories, as well as writing the preface, dedication, and title. Through a detailed analysis of correspondence and manuscripts, the study demonstrates how Guðbrandur and his collaborator, Konrad Maurer, determined the final form of the collection. The research highlights how Guðbrandur influenced not only the content of the folktales but also the framework and presentation of the collection.
